Use MSN, Yahoo! or ICQ in iChat 3  10

iChatI’ve got quite a few contacts who I chat to via MSN and a few via iChat who are either using a Mac or are on AIM and I wanted to be able to use just one application to talk to any and all of them. The third incarnation of iChat will let you do that, albeit it with some tinkering - this is possible because it now supports Jabber.

First of all, I needed to get hold of a third-party Jabber client - Psi was recommended.

After downloading and installing Psi a Jabber account was needed so I picked a suitable server,, from the list - you can register a new account from within the application:

Create a new Jabber account from within Psi

Then I needed to select “Service Discovery” from Psi’s General menu (which queries the server for a list of protocols) and then click “Browse” to view the list:

List of protocols on Jabber server

After finding the protocol I wanted in the list - in this case “MSN Transport” - Control+click on it and select “Register”. I entered and saved my MSN details and quit Psi.

Then I needed to open iChat, add my new Jabber account:

Add Jabber account to iChat

And I can now get hold of my MSN contacts using iChat. Super.

The information in this post was taken directly from a post on MACOSX•COM. I should also point out that the superb Adium X already lets you talk to your contact via many services including MSN, AIM and Yahoo!.

I’ve got an AIM account, a .Mac account as well as a Jabber account, but I have no end of problems with Jabber. I use my MSN Account more than anything because that’s what most of my contacts use, but I would prefer to use my .Mac account… - Wayne Smallman

I’ve got about 30 contacts on MSN, 1 one AIM and 1 on .Mac, but I *hate* Microsoft’s MSN client for OS X with a vengence. I just really wanted to use iChat so I could have the “online/offline” thingy in the menu bar. So far, Jabber’s been okay … - Timmargh

I can’t seem to get to connect to jabber with psi… what am I doing wrong - jago

Is anyone else having trouble registering with’s Yahoo service? - JamieB

I haven’t tried a Yahoo account, yet, but I’ll try soon. I have had other contacts who have had trouble too. - Timmargh

Hmm, I use to use fire, never tried Jabber. I use AIM, Yahoo, and AMSN (love it) - brwneyedgemini

Thanks for commenting, brwneyedgemini! Or should that be “browneyedgemini” … ? I’ve tried registering a Yahoo! account with but with no luck - I emailed them but have yet to get a reply. - Timmargh

trying to connect msn and it says An unexpected SSL error occured. [-9806] and doesn’t connect… - ferreguetti

Hi all, Good post. Although it’s been a while since the last comment, the Yahoo does seem to be initialized and running on so you might as well have a go at it. Good luck, Ofer - Ofer

Got a question. I have a mac but no .mac account. I have a yahoo address. is it possible to use iChat simply - like msn, or does this require 3 hours of hoops and loops to jump through to get it working? Thanks - I can’t seem to get a straight answer to this anywhere, Corran - corran
